Baird analyst Tristan Gerra cited supply chain sources.Refers to, Intel may cooperate with TSMC with the assistance of the US government, and is expected to split its advanced process wafer fab and establish a joint venture with TSMC.
TSMC will be responsible for the operation of the joint venture and may also apply for US government subsidies as a new company. After the separation of its wafer fab business, Intel is expected to be able to focus more resources on chip design and related technology advancement, and leverage TSMC's advanced process technology to advance its processor product development.
If this development continues, Intel will likely transform into a fabless company similar to Qualcomm and MediaTek. However, Intel may still retain its existing process fabs and continue to provide foundry services for mature process technologies, only choosing to split out advanced process technologies such as 3nm and 2nm.
This news has not yet been confirmed by Intel or TSMC, and if both parties intend to establish a joint venture, it will still take considerable time to complete. However, market opinion suggests that if Intel were to spin off its advanced process fab and establish a joint venture with TSMC, it would not only help improve Intel's current financial situation but also attract more fabless processor companies to collaborate with the Intel-TSMC joint venture.
Intel's recent financial situation has not been ideal, especially with the decline in its processor market share at the end of last year. Although its overall market share is still 67.4%, it has also hit a new low since 2002. In particular, its server processor market share has also begun to face competition from AMD and other companies, making the market generally pessimistic about Intel's current development.
