Ring, Amazon's smart home security brand, announced a new feature called "Single Event Alert" for its cameras and doorbells. This feature will use generative AI technology to address the long-standing problem of users being bombarded with unnecessary notifications.
AI categorizes recurring events, so a notification is only sent once if a child is playing in the backyard.
Ring points out that the core of this feature is to use generative AI to intelligently categorize "recurring events" into a single notification, rather than issuing alerts continuously throughout the duration of the event.
Ring gave an example: In the past, when a home camera detected "children playing in the backyard," the system would send a notification "every time" it detected movement, as long as the children continued to move.
After importing Single Event Alert, the system will send a notification to the user once it first recognizes the event "a child is playing". The AI will then understand that this is a continuous positive event and will not send it repeatedly, allowing the user to focus on other things.
Ring continues to incorporate AI applications.
This contrasts sharply with the experience of Ring's early doorbell products, where doorbells would even trigger motion alarms if a large truck drove past the door, causing changes in light and shadow.
The newly launched Single Event Alert represents the latest step in Ring's proactive shift towards AI applications over the past year. Prior to this, Ring had already launched several AI features, including "Smart Video Search" and "AI Video Descriptions."
Release schedule
Ring announced that the Single Event Alert feature will begin rolling out today. This feature is not offered for free but is part of the Ring Protect Home subscription plan, initially launching in the United States (excluding Illinois) and Canada.
