In his keynote address at AWS re:Invent 2025, Dr. Werner Vogels, Amazon's Chief Technology Officer, once again took the stage and offered insightful perspectives on the current prevalence of AI technology and the resulting anxiety about whether developers will be replaced. Vogels emphasized that AI tools should not be a reason for replacing humans; rather, developers should leverage these tools to become key figures in successfully completing their work.

Even though "Vibe Coding" and the practice of using natural language or intuition to generate code with AI are becoming increasingly popular, ultimately someone still needs to be able to understand the actual meaning of the code and know how to correct and optimize this AI-generated content. It is also emphasized that developers need to master more technological advantages in this trend in order to realize their true value.
From a "Renaissance" polymath to a "T-shaped" personality, communication skills become key.
In his speech, Werner Vogels reviewed the history of technological development, pointing out that early developers often needed to..."Renaissance" Like polymaths of the Renaissance era, they possessed an unparalleled understanding of hardware, software, networks, and architecture. However, with the rise of AI agents, developers must evolve into "T-shaped" talents.

The so-called "T-shaped" talent refers to someone who has developed more in-depth skills (the vertical axis of the T) while having a broader range of knowledge (the horizontal axis of the T).
Werner Vogels believes that in the current development ecosystem, "communication" will become more important than ever. This is not only communication between people, but also interaction between people and various AI agents. Developers must have enough breadth to understand the whole system and enough depth to examine and verify the code generated by AI agents, so as to bring out the true value and judgment of humans in subsequent adjustments.

Leveraging AWS Kiro to accelerate efficiency allows us to return to the essence of "problem-solving".
In response to this trend, Werner Vogels also specifically mentioned AWS's Kiro Autonomous Agent service.
Kiro enables developers to accelerate programming efficiency, allowing AI to handle tedious and repetitive coding tasks. However, Werner Vogels emphasizes that this is not about letting developers "lay down," but rather freeing up valuable time so that developers with "T-shaped" skills can focus more on macro-level architectural design, business logic judgment, and the construction of innovative services.
AWS's service platform is dedicated to helping developers turn their ideas into services more quickly, whether by using Amazon Bedrock to connect models or through...KiroCollaborative development aims to enable developers to create greater value with the assistance of AI technology.
Werner Vogels concludes that AI is a powerful tool, but it cannot replace human dedication to quality and understanding of the essence of problems. In this new era, developers who can effectively utilize AI agents and communicate with them efficiently will be the core driving force for innovation.

As an aside: Werner Vogels' last talk at re:Invent.
At the end of his keynote speech at re:Invent 2025, Werner Vogels stated that this was his last time speaking at a re:Invent event, but it did not mean he would leave Amazon. He would continue to serve as Chief Technology Officer, but would instead give the stage to more young people.
In the past, many developers looked forward to Werner Vogels' observations and thoughts at the re:Invent event held at the end of each year. Especially since he is approaching 70 years old in recent years, his passion for technology has not diminished. In addition, his past continuous efforts to promote various technological developments within Amazon have made the opinions expressed by this legendary figure attract a lot of attention.
Although he will remain Amazon's Chief Technology Officer and will not leave Amazon, perhaps due to his advancing age and a desire to give more opportunities to younger people, Werner Vogels decided that this speech at re:Invent 2025 would be his last performance.
Meanwhile, Werner Vogels' speech focused on "Back to the Beginning," urging developers to return to their roots and consider how to effectively utilize AI tools to improve product development efficiency and realize more of the ideas they have conceived.
