Apart from Update hardwareAt its hardware launch event in New York, Amazon also stated that the new version of Alexa+ will also be used in the new Echo series smart speakers and Fire TV series TVs.
Alexa+: The evolution of the generative AI assistant
Panos Panay, Amazon's senior vice president of products and services, said that when Alexa was launched, it gave people a sense of the future. Now, with the help of generative AI technology, Alexa+ has evolved from "understanding commands" to "actively handling problems."
The new Alexa+ not only enables natural conversations but also connects to tens of thousands of third-party services and devices. Through a modular "expert" design, it automatically matches solutions for needs such as entertainment, home automation, shopping, and schedule management. This means users only need to make a request, and Alexa+ will complete cross-platform and cross-service operations in the background, truly acting as a "digital butler."
In addition, the new version of Alexa+ has highly personalized capabilities. It will be able to remember family dietary needs, anniversaries, and even help arrange schedules, and can seamlessly continue the conversation across Echo smart speakers, mobile apps, and the Alexa.com website.
Currently, a separate subscription to the Alexa+ service is priced at $19.99 per month, but members who subscribe to the Prime service can use it for free, and the other advantages of the Prime service enhance the overall value of this subscription service.
Add more services
In addition to bringing the new Alexa+ service to more Echo smart speakers, Amazon will also use the Alexa+ service to enable Fire TV series TVs to search for video clips using natural language, such as "find the fight scene with rain" or "help me find the clips where a certain actor appears." This can be done across multiple streaming platforms such as Netflix and HBO Max. While watching, you can also ask about the actor's background and behind-the-scenes footage in real time, and even query real-time data during live sports broadcasts on services such as Prime Video, Sling TV, DirecTV and Fubo.
Starting next year, the Kindle series will support two major AI features: "Story So Far," which quickly organizes the progress of a book's plot without spoilers, making it easy to quickly resume reading when returning to an e-book after a long absence; and "Ask this Book," which allows users to ask questions about the book and receive contextually relevant answers. These features will first be available on the Kindle iOS app and will gradually be extended to thousands of e-books.
AI assistants enter the era of action agents
From the launch of Alexa+ to the comprehensive upgrades of Echo Studio and Kindle/Fire TV, Amazon clearly hopes to make its AI assistant an "invisible agent" in users' lives, not only enabling it to obey commands but also to understand and act, connecting entertainment, shopping and daily life needs.
With competitors like Google, Apple, and Meta also accelerating their expansion, the AI assistant market is entering a new round of fierce competition. Whoever strikes the optimal balance between AI, hardware, and services will have the opportunity to dominate the next generation of intelligent ecosystems.
