Amazon recently announced a new AI translation service called "Kindle Translate," which is currently in beta testing. This service will allow independent authors on the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform to more easily translate their eBooks into multiple languages, thereby reaching readers worldwide and increasing revenue opportunities.
Amazon points out that currently less than 5% of works on Amazon.com offer more than one language version, indicating a huge potential business opportunity for KDP authors in language expansion.
AI translation is now available; the beta testing phase supports English, Spanish, and German languages.
During the Beta testing phase, Kindle Translate will be the first to support:
• Two-way translation between English and Spanish
• Translate from German to English
According to Amazon, authors can manage and access their translations directly through its KDP portal, including selecting target languages, setting prices, and publishing.
Released within days, AI automatically assesses accuracy.
Amazon emphasizes that authors can publish fully formatted translations of their work within a few days.
In terms of process, all AI-translated content undergoes "automatically evaluated for accuracy" before publication. Authors can also choose to preview the content before publication or set it to be published automatically.
This move is clearly the latest step by Amazon's KDP platform to support independent authors, expand its global audience, and enhance its monetization potential.
The reader app will have a "clear label" and will be included in KDP Select curated selections.
As for readers, ebooks translated via Kindle Translate will be available for sale and download on the Amazon store. Amazon emphasizes that, to maintain transparency, readers will see clear labels indicating that the book is an AI-translated work by Kindle Translate, and translation samples will be provided for readers to preview.
Furthermore, these AI-translated works are also eligible for the KDP Select program and can be included in the Kindle Unlimited subscription service. Amazon states that as more languages are introduced in the future, readers will have the opportunity to explore an ever-expanding catalog of new translated works.
