As the podcast market continues to grow, Amazon earlier launched a large-scale content department restructuring plan, which included the podcast it acquired for about $2020 million in 3.Wondery Podcast online serviceThe company is splitting up and adjusting the integration direction of its various audio content products. According to Bloomberg News, the restructuring will affect approximately 110 employees, and Wondery's current CEO Jen Sargent will also leave.
Amazon stated that it will continue to produce podcast content in the future, but will adjust its offerings to better meet the diverse needs of podcast listeners and viewers. These adjustments will be divided into two major directions: narrative-oriented and creator-oriented.
Narrative podcasts will be integrated into Audible, while the Wondery brand will remain operational.
Narrative-focused podcasts such as "American Scandal" and "Business Wars" will be integrated into Amazon's Audible team in the future. The Wondery brand will be retained, and the Wondery Plus subscription service and app will continue to operate.
Wondery Plus currently offers users the ability to listen to select shows first, but whether this functionality will be fully implemented in the future remains to be announced by Amazon. This adjustment underscores Amazon's continued focus on the long-term value and brand loyalty of original narrative content, and its promotion through Audible, a more established service platform.
Celebrity and video-oriented programs are now separate Creator Services teams
Celebrity shows such as "New Heights," hosted by NFL stars Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce, and "Armchair Expert," hosted by Hollywood actor Dax Shepard, will be integrated into the newly established Creator Services team, which will focus on working with creators and focusing on driving podcast growth and large-scale advertising sponsorship opportunities.
Amazon pointed out that this type of program has significant differences from traditional podcasts in terms of audience behavior, discovery and revenue models. Especially after the rise of video platforms such as YouTube, video-oriented podcasts have become the main viewing trend, so different market strategies and operating structures are needed.
Steve Boom, Amazon's vice president of audio, Twitch and gaming, saidInternal memoThe report states: "The podcast market has evolved significantly over the past few years. With the growing popularity of video podcasts, creator-led video programming and traditional audio-based narrative content have fundamentally diverged in terms of audience habits, growth strategies, and monetization methods."
This passage reflects Amazon's keen observation of current podcast trends and emphasizes that different program types should be managed in a differentiated manner to respond to market changes more efficiently.
Some of the affected employees will be transferred within Amazon
Although this restructuring involves the layoff of more than 100 employees, according to Amazon's statement to The VergeDisclose informationSome affected employees will have the opportunity to transfer to other departments of Amazon to continue their career development.
Amazon's acquisition of Wondery in 2020 coincided with the rapid rise of the podcast market. At the time, Wondery, renowned for its high-quality narrative programming, had become one of the fastest-growing independent podcast production companies globally. However, a rapidly changing market landscape, with platforms like Spotify and YouTube investing heavily in audio and video podcasts and the rise of the creator economy, forced Amazon to reevaluate its audio content strategy and business portfolio.
This reorganization is not only an internal adjustment by Amazon to reclassify content types, but also shows that large platforms must make more flexible adjustments and resource integration when facing the transformation of the podcast industry in order to continue to attract creators, consolidate user bases and strengthen business models.
