Amazon is currently developing its large fresh food supermarket Amazon FreshCancelOriginally used for unmanned storesJust Walk Out automated checkout technology, turning to its smart shopping cartdash card, allowing consumers to scan the label for pricing when adding items to the shopping cart.
However, Amazon said it will continue to use Just Walk Out automatic checkout technology in smaller unmanned stores and small stores.
This adjustment may be due to the fact that Just Walk Out automated checkout technology still struggles to scale to large supermarkets, potentially leading to recognition errors. Scanning and identifying items within the shopping cart appears to allow the system to more accurately determine which items consumers have taken from the shelves. It also allows consumers to more easily understand product prices, such as whether there are additional promotional discounts for purchasing additional items.
In addition, by completing product price recognition directly on the shopping cart, the cost of installing cameras and other equipment in the store can be reduced. It can also reduce disputes about whether their privacy is affected, or the uncomfortable feeling of being monitored when shopping in the store.
Amazon is currently reevaluating its brick-and-mortar store expansion strategy. It has already closed most of its physical bookstores, pop-up stores, and Amazon Style apparel stores. It has also suspended plans to expand its fresh food supermarkets and is reconsidering which smart store technologies to deploy in its stores.
