To mark its 15th anniversary in the Spanish market, Amazon announced at MWC 2026 that it will invest an additional €337 billion in Spain, primarily to expand its AWS cloud and AI data center infrastructure in the Aragón region. This is not only Amazon's largest technology investment in Spain to date, but will also directly drive AI innovation and digital transformation in Europe through the newly built AI server production lines and supply chain facilities.
Amazon's massive investment is not only focused on hardware expansion, but also reflects its long-term commitment to the local economy, green energy sustainability, and water resource management.
Creating substantial economic benefits, a new AI server repair and assembly production line will be built.
Amazon estimates that this long-term investment plan for the AWS Europe (Spain) region will contribute approximately €317 billion to Spain's GDP by 2035 and provide approximately 29900 full-time equivalent jobs annually (including direct, indirect, and derivative employment opportunities). Of these, 6700 jobs will come from Amazon's direct investment, covering senior data center operations personnel and related supplier employees.
To better support the operation of its data centers, Amazon also plans to establish new supply chain facilities in the Aragorn region, including:
• Creating local jobs:Once fully operational, the facility is expected to create approximately 1800 jobs in the local area.
• Server production and testing:It includes a dedicated manufacturing plant for server assembly and testing, as well as a dedicated logistics warehouse.
• Circular Economy Practices:A dedicated "AI and Machine Learning Server Manufacturing and Repair Center" will be established, which will be a key hub for Amazon to promote its hardware circular economy strategy.
Deeply rooted in the local community: Emphasizing green energy, water resources, and community investment.
AI data centers are notorious for being "power and water guzzlers," so Amazon has made a special emphasis on sustainable development measures in this expansion.
• 100% Green Energy Operation:Amazon has pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and has already invested in 100 solar and wind power projects in Spain. Meanwhile, the AWS data center in Aragorn has been operating 100% on renewable energy since its launch in 2022.
• Water Positive: The goal is to ensure that by 2030, the amount of water returned to communities exceeds the water consumption of their direct operations. AWS has already invested €17.2 million in Aragorn to support five water projects, such as the implementation of smart irrigation systems, helping local farms save up to 50% (approximately 93 million liters) of water annually.
• Community Development Fund:Amazon plans to invest €3000 million in the regions where its infrastructure is located by 2035, focusing on education, sustainability and the development of local technology talent.
Expanding its cloud footprint: Becoming the first tech giant to cover the entire territory of Aragorn.
With this expansion, Amazon becomes the first technology company to announce the construction of a data center in the Teruel province. Combined with its existing new facilities in Huesca and Zaragoza, AWS's advanced cloud infrastructure will now officially cover all three provinces of Aragon, further elevating the region to a digital hub in Europe.
Analysis of viewpoints
Amazon's decision to invest a hefty €337 billion in the Aragon region of Spain is backed by extremely sophisticated strategic considerations.
First, the computing power war in the AI era is essentially an "energy war." Spain possesses Europe's unique sunshine and wind resources, making it an invaluable and perfect base for AWS, which desperately needs stable and abundant green energy to power its AI servers.
Secondly, the European market has increasingly stringent requirements for "data sovereignty" and compliance. By directly establishing a large infrastructure and supply chain (including server assembly and maintenance) in Europe, not only can the supply chain risks brought about by geopolitics be reduced, but the trust of large European companies and government agencies can also be won.
It's worth noting that Amazon has specifically established an "AI Server Manufacturing and Repair Center" in this plan. With the high cost and rapid replacement rate of high-end AI chips (such as NVIDIA GPUs or self-developed chips), establishing local hardware recycling and repair mechanisms will become a key tool for cloud service providers to control operating costs and achieve ESG goals in the future.
