Alphabet's drone company Wing is currentlyPartnering with Walmart, will begin launching drone delivery services for retail chains in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas metropolitan area.
The service is expected to take off from the Walmart supermarket in Frisco in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, and is expected to provide delivery of goods including groceries, daily necessities and over-the-counter drugs to users within a 6-mile (about 9.66-kilometer) radius. The delivery can be carried out at a speed of 65 miles (about 104.61 kilometers) per hour, and users can receive the ordered goods in about half an hour.
At the same time, Wing also emphasized that it will be able to provide delivery services for extremely difficult-to-deliver goods such as eggs and frozen foods, which means that it is confident in the stability and speed of its drone delivery service.
This service will be completed in an automated manner, and remote monitoring will be used to confirm whether the delivery mission is completed normally. There is no need for staff to be stationed at Walmart or to go there in person to confirm whether the goods are delivered correctly. All flight delivery processes will be completed automatically by drones.
Prior to this, Wing had already launched in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area in April 2022.Provide goods delivery service, and also cooperates with Walgreens, a chain drugstore and grocery store, on delivery services. This cooperation with Walmart means that the scope of its services will be expanded.
In addition to cooperating with Wing, Walmart has also been deploying its own DroneUp drone delivery service since 2022, covering Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Utah and Virginia, serving approximately 400 million households. However, it laid off as many as 418 employees at the beginning of this year. The announcement of a partnership with Wing may be an attempt to reduce the cost of internal investment in technology development.
