Apple unexpectedly announced the new generation of flagship over-ear headphones, AirPods Max 2, five years after its predecessor. This highly anticipated update finally brings a major upgrade, with the core highlight being the inclusion of the same H2 chip as AirPods Pro 2. This not only delivers more powerful active noise cancellation and purer sound quality, but also introduces intelligent features such as "Adaptive Audio" and "Conversation Awareness" to the over-ear headphone series for the first time, and supports "Instant Translation" for a brand-new experience in cross-language communication.

H2 chip-driven: Noise reduction performance improved by 1.5 times, sound quality further evolved.

Eric Treski, Apple's Director of Audio Product Marketing, stated, "The superior performance of the H2 chip enhances the active noise cancellation of AirPods Max by up to 1.5 times, delivering an exceptional all-day listening experience." This upgrade is thanks to the H2 chip and new computational audio algorithms, which more effectively eliminate persistent low-frequency noises such as airplane engines and commuter train noise, allowing users to fully immerse themselves in music, work, or calls.

At the same time, "Transparency Mode" has also been recalibrated. Through a new digital signal processing algorithm optimized for the microphone arrays of the H2 and AirPods Max, ambient sounds sound more natural, allowing users to remain aware of their surroundings and the people around them, without the oppressive or unnatural feeling often found in some noise-canceling headphones in the past.

In terms of sound quality, AirPods Max 2 features a new high dynamic range amplifier, delivering a purer sound while maintaining the highly praised sound characteristics of its predecessor. The official description emphasizes improved instrument positioning in Spatial Audio content, more accurate and consistent low-frequency response, and more natural mid and high frequencies.

For audiophiles who pursue the ultimate sound quality, the most noteworthy upgrade is that when the new AirPods Max is connected to the included USB-C cable, it can support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio, bringing the highest quality audio experience to music, movies and games.

Intelligent functions are being fully deployed: from "conversation awareness" to "real-time translation".

The introduction of the H2 chip means that AirPods Max 2 can finally support the rich array of smart features accumulated by the AirPods Pro series in recent years. Among them, the most practical is "Adaptive Audio," which automatically adjusts the level of active noise cancellation and "transparency mode" according to ambient noise, allowing users to get the best audio experience in different scenarios such as entering a coffee shop or going outdoors.

"Conversation Awareness" is another thoughtful design feature. When a user starts talking to someone nearby, the headphones automatically lower the volume and reduce background noise, making the conversation smoother without having to manually pause the music or switch modes. This will be a highly attractive upgrade for users who frequently need to switch between listening to music and having brief conversations.

As for the new features, they include "Instant Translation" powered by Apple Intelligence. This feature allows users to have real-time conversations with people speaking different languages in face-to-face situations using AirPods Max 2. Combined with the iPhone's translation app, the conversation is translated in real time and played back through the headphones, bringing new possibilities to business trips, international conferences, or even just leisure travel.

Built for creators: Studio-level features and remote camera control

Another major highlight of the AirPods Max 2 is its deep support for content creators. Through a USB-C connection, the AirPods Max 2 becomes the only headset that supports music creators in creating and mixing with "personalized spatial audio" and head tracking. This means that in Logic Pro and other music creation apps, producers and musicians can use AirPods Max to handle their entire professional workflow, with high-fidelity compressed audio and ultra-low latency ensuring accuracy in the creative process.

For podcast producers, interviewers, and singers, the new "Studio Quality Audio Recording" feature will be a significant help. The official statement says this feature allows for higher quality audio and a more natural vocal texture, simplifying workflows for live interviews or portable recordings.

In addition, AirPods Max 2 also features a "camera remote control" function. When taking photos with an iPhone or iPad, users can simply press the digital knob on the earbuds to take a picture or start and stop recording. This is a very useful new feature for YouTubers and video creators who need to take selfies, group photos, or remotely control shooting.

The design language continues, with five classic color schemes making their debut.

In terms of design, the AirPods Max 2 retains the iconic style of its predecessor, including a stainless steel headband frame, a breathable woven mesh top, and replaceable ear pads that can be magnetically attached. As for color options, it maintains five choices: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue, to meet the individual style preferences of different users.

It's worth noting that the AirPods Max 2 also continues Apple's commitment to environmental sustainability. All magnets are made from 100% recycled rare earth elements, the earcups are made from 100% recycled polyester, and all Apple-designed printed circuit boards use 100% recycled gold plating and solder. The paper packaging is made from 100% fiber, making it easy to recycle, echoing Apple's 2030 carbon neutrality goal.

Pricing and Availability

The AirPods Max 2 starts at $549 USD, and in Taiwan, it's priced at NT$17990, maintaining the same price as its predecessor – offering more for the same price. The release date in Taiwan has not yet been announced; the official statement only indicates that pre-orders will be available at a later date. New subscribers to the AirPods Max 2 will also receive three months of free Apple Music service.

AppleCare+ service plan for AirPods Max 2 was also launched at the same time, covering accidental damage such as drops and splashes, theft and loss protection for eligible products, battery replacement service, and 24/7 support from Apple experts.
