In March this year, Tencent was confirmed to acquire the company for 11.6 billion euros.Acquired approximately 25% stake in Ubisoft, and after splitting game brands such as "Assassin's Creed" into independent subsidiaries, Ubisoft announced earlier that it would establishNew subsidiary Vantage Studios, and positioned it as the first "Creative House".

After Tencent's investment, Ubisoft announced the establishment of its first "creative studio" Vantage Studios

Vantage Studios' primary responsibility is to oversee Ubisoft's three core franchises, including Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. This means the studio will directly develop Ubisoft's most iconic and stable games.

New architecture brings more autonomy

Ubisoft stated in a statement that the primary goal of establishing Vantage Studios is to empower development teams with greater autonomy and decision-making efficiency, shortening the gap between player feedback and actual game content adjustments. Co-CEOs Christophe Derennes and Charlie Guillemot also emphasized that the new operating model will enable teams to respond more quickly to market changes and strengthen accountability.

In fact, as early as July of this year, Ubisoft had already appointed two co-CEOs and confirmed the organizational positioning of Vantage Studios. According to internal sources, the studio name "Vantage" was chosen through a vote by the company's 2300 employees, reflecting Ubisoft's attempt to involve grassroots teams in decision-making.

Multiple locations and multinational teams

Vantage Studios' development and operations will span multiple Ubisoft offices, including Montreal, Quebec, Shebrouck, Saguenay, and locations in Europe such as Barcelona and Sofia, demonstrating the scale and flexibility of multinational collaboration. Ubisoft plans to establish additional "creative studios" under the umbrella of "shared DNA and development expertise," but Vantage Studios is currently the initial launch.

Tencent's role and future development

In this partnership, Tencent, while holding a stake in Vantage, will primarily play an advisory role, with actual decision-making power remaining with the two co-CEOs. This arrangement not only mitigates concerns about external shareholders interfering with core IP, but also allows Ubisoft to secure funding and resources while maintaining its independence.

For Ubisoft, this wave of reforms can be seen as a response to recent operational challenges. Over the past few years, Ubisoft has experienced several major titles underperforming, studio closures, and layoffs, putting pressure on its overall revenue structure. However, the success of Assassin's Creed: Shadow of the Tomb seems to have reaffirmed the resilience of its core IP.

Synchronization effect with Xbox Game Pass

Notably, Microsoft recently announced the addition of franchises like "Assassin's Creed," "Far Cry," and "Rainbow Six" to Xbox Game Pass, albeit with a corresponding fee increase. While this move may boost the service's appeal by leveraging popular IP, whether it can offset the backlash from the price increase remains to be seen.

Overall, the establishment of Vantage Studios symbolizes a comprehensive restructuring of Ubisoft's organizational structure and development processes. By introducing greater autonomy, shared resources, and a player-focused decision-making model, Ubisoft aims to further strengthen the market position of its three core brands amid intensifying competition in the global games industry.
