Activision officially announced the new game that was recently previewedCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold WarThe story is set in the 1980s during the Cold War when the two major powers of the East and the West were in confrontation. In addition to the return of classic characters Mason, Hudson and Woods, it further adds character customization and multiple endings. It is expected to be launched on Windows PC, PlayStation 11 and Xbox One on November 13, and corresponding versions will be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X at the end of the year.
"Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" is co-produced by Activision's studios Treyarch and Raven, and also integrates resources from Beenox, High Moon Studios, Sledgehammer Games, and Activision Shanghai Game Studio.
In the game, players play the role of an elite special forces soldier and will pursue the villain Perseus in the game to prevent the balance of the Cold War from being broken. They will also carry out missions with characters Mason, Hudson and Woods who have previously appeared in the series.
According to Raven Senior Creative Director Dan Vondrak, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War follows up on the previous Black Ops series and returns the story campaign mode to stealth action and conspiracy theories. It is also based on historical adaptation elements, allowing players to explore historical inside stories in the game. It also emphasizes that the history of the Cold War provided the development team with many design ideas, which are reflected in the game content.
The newly added character customization function not only allows players to customize their character's name, skin color, gender, birthplace, and military background, but also allows them to choose whether their personality tends to be reliable, loyal, emotionally unstable, or violent, and adds multiple endings and many side quests.
As for the storyline, the team collaborated with David Goyer, an American screenwriter, novelist and director who was involved in the production of "Black Ops", to help design the game's storyline. They hoped to attract loyal players of the original series and attract more new players to join through the Cold War storyline. The game's storyline was designed based on the period of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, the Vietnam War in 1968, and documents released by the US government in recent years.
In addition, due to the impact of the novel coronavirus epidemic this year, most research and development work was completed by the development team at home. Even the action and sound recordings of the actors participating in the performance were completed at home. This actually created more different ideas. For example, due to the impact of the epidemic, various recording tasks had to be split up, which allowed the actors to have more time and mood to focus on the action or sound performance, so that the performance emotions could be better integrated into the role.
The development team said that players will face many real historical figures in "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" and will explore places such as East Berlin, Turkey, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Moscow and more, and emphasize the realism of the game.
To present the Cold War backdrop, the R&D team also researched representative film trends and costume designs of the time, hoping to make the game content more realistic. They also used filter effects to give the game scenes different tones, making the plot more vivid. They even used a realistic camera style to create a more realistic picture, allowing players to further experience the tense atmosphere of the Cold War.
Activision also announced that it will announce more details about the multiplayer game on September 9th.
