OpenAI's next target is clearly the scientific research field, having recently announced the acquisition of the cloud-based LaTeX platform.CrixetThey also launched a brand new app based on this technology – "Prism".
This app, described as "the Claude Code of the scientific community," deeply integrates OpenAI's latest GPT-5.2 Thinking model and LaTeX typesetting system, aiming to help scientists, researchers, and students solve tedious tasks ranging from paper formatting and citation to course planning. Importantly, it's free to use starting today with any ChatGPT personal account.
Integrating Crixet technology to specifically address the pain points of LaTeX typesetting.
For people in STEM fields or academiaLaTeXIt is the standard for academic writing, but its complex syntax is often a nightmare for beginners, especially the extremely time-consuming process of drawing charts (such as using TikZ commands).
Prism is built on the Crixet platform, which OpenAI recently acquired. By importing the GPT-5.2 Thinking model (replacing the original Chirp agent in Crixet), Prism can understand natural language commands and automatically convert them into precise LaTeX code.
For example, users can directly ask the AI to "draw a neural network architecture diagram," and Prism will automatically generate the corresponding TikZ code and render the diagram, greatly saving the time of manually writing code.
Automated Literature Review and Teaching Aid
Beyond formatting, Prism functions more like an all-around research assistant. In its official demonstration, OpenAI explains how Prism automatically searches for scientific literature related to the user's paper topic and automatically generates a formatted bibliography.
In addition, Prism can also help professors and educators generate graduate-level lesson plans, and even automatically generate practice questions for students on advanced topics such as "general relativity".
However, regarding the issue of AI potentially creating "illusions" that lead to false citations, Kevin Weil, OpenAI's VP of Science, emphasized, "This does not mean that scientists are exempt from verification responsibilities." He stated that Prism's goal is to accelerate processes and integrate AI into workflows to maintain control, but users are still responsible for verifying the accuracy of the content.
With the personal version now free, Crixet has become history.
Prism is now available free of charge to all ChatGPT individual account users, supporting an unlimited number of projects and collaborators. The Crixet brand, however, is confirmed to be discontinued and will no longer be offered as a separate service.
OpenAI also plans to soon roll out Prism to enterprise and education versions of ChatGPT, including Business, Team, Enterprise, and Education.
