Developed by The Pokémon Company, GAME FREAK, and KOEI TECMO GAMES, the new title "Pokémon Pokopia" is scheduled for release on March 5th this year. It has a completely different tone from the series that everyone is familiar with in the past. It is not designed in the traditional adventure and battle game format, but is a sandbox building game that focuses on "slow living". Players will play as a Ditto that can transform into a human and work together with the only remaining "Professor Vine" in an abandoned town to revive the town through construction and communication.
A completely different visual and atmospheric experience
Upon entering the game, the first thing you notice is its relaxed atmosphere. The game is set in a town where vegetation has withered and humans and Pokémon have all left. This sense of "building from scratch" is very solid; players need to collect basic materials such as wood and stone to craft items and furniture.
Core gameplay: Habitat construction and ability acquisition
The core fun of the game lies in creating "habitats" suitable for different Pokémon to live in. Interestingly, the player, as Ditto, can improve the environment by interacting with newly encountered partners and learning their moves.
For example:
• Add greenery:After learning the "Leaf" move, you can plant vegetation on the previously barren land.
• Overcoming obstacles:You can destroy walls that block your way by using "rock breaking".
• Traversing terrain:After learning "surfing" or "gliding", the exploration range can be extended to the other side of the sea or the nearby mountains.
Once the habitat meets the environmental standards, it will attract more companions to live there. These companions will also make all sorts of "wishes," such as Slowpoke complaining that the ground is difficult to walk on, and Onix hoping for more spacious activity areas. Helping them solve their problems will not only deepen their friendships but also drive the development of the entire town.
Rich interaction and multiplayer collaboration
Beyond building, the game also cleverly creates a sense of "lifestyle." You can see your friends playing jump rope with Bulbasaur's vines, or asking Charmander to help start a fire for cooking. Players can also freely change their hairstyles and clothing to showcase their personal style.
In terms of multiplayer mode, Pokémon Pokopia supports up to four players online simultaneously. During our experience, we tried cooperating with other players to build a magnificent house and freely arrange the furniture that everyone worked together to create. This sense of participation in managing a community will be a major highlight of the game.
Summary
Overall, Pokémon Pokopia successfully blazes a new trail in the sandbox building genre. It abandons the pressure of competition, instead pursuing the pure joy of harmonious coexistence between players, the environment, and companions. The game is scheduled for release on March 5th this year on the Nintendo Switch 2 platform, available in both boxed keycard and digital download formats, and will support Traditional Chinese.
