A decade in the blink of an eye: From the 20th anniversary EVA Phone to a brand new chapter
Looking back at the development of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" over the past decade, it has not only continued to advance in film and television works, but its influence on technology and daily life has never waned.
Back in 2015, to celebrate its 20th anniversary, the official team launched a limited-edition, unlocked commemorative smartphone, the "EVA Phone," developed collaboratively by fans. At the time, its design was heavily influenced by Unit-01, and its custom UI and classic sound effects sparked a frenzy in the tech and anime communities. Ten years later, EVA merchandise collaborations have expanded from smartphones and smartwatches to various home appliances and automotive devices (even including a shovel for construction?), making it one of the most commercially valuable IPs.
Khara embarks on a full-scale journey, bidding farewell to the shadow of GAINAX's bankruptcy.
However, this 30-year journey has not been all glamorous.
Just before its 30th anniversary, GAINAX, the legendary animation studio that created works such as "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and boasted a 40-year history, officially declared bankruptcy and liquidation, a truly lamentable event. At that time, Hideaki Anno also publicly revealed for the first time the inaction and financial black hole of GAINAX's former management. To protect this painstakingly crafted work and the hard work of its creators, Hideaki Anno actively intervened through his own company, Khara, not only acquiring the complete copyright of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" but also helping to deal with the numerous messes left behind by his former employer.
The announcement of this new work for the 30th anniversary not only symbolizes the continuation of the EVA universe, but also represents that this IP has completely severed the historical burdens of the past and is moving towards a truly clean and pure new starting point under the complete leadership of Studio Khara.
