With Sony planning a mid-May event for the new Xperia X series in Japan, pre-orders for the new phones appear to be about to begin. Sony Mobile announced the launch of the new Xperia X series at MWC 2016. Following a planned launch event in Japan in mid-May, the company also announced the upcoming opening of pre-orders for the new Xperia X series and released a new series of promotional videos highlighting the high-speed photography capabilities of the new phones' cameras.
However, pre-orders are expected to be limited to the Xperia X and Xperia XA models in the Xperia X series, not including the high-end Xperia Performance model with the Snapdragon 820 processor. A new Bluetooth headset, the Smart Ear, is also available. As for the actual release date, it's currently expected to be June of this year at the earliest.

Sony Mobile previously stated that the Xperia X series product plan will be based on the product plan proposed by Sony Mobile's new CEO, Hiroki Totoki, upon his appointment. While retaining some design elements from the Xperia Z series, it will also incorporate new design concepts, such as a 2.5D screen edge and a metal brushed finish on the back. Under the "One Sony" marketing strategy, the Xperia X series will remain at the core of Sony's market development, incorporating technologies from the camera and Walkman divisions into its design.
While the existing Xperia Z, Xperia C, and Xperia M series will continue to be sold, Sony Mobile has confirmed that the Xperia X series will be a fresh start. However, the company does not rule out the possibility of adding additional product lines with different specifications, such as the Xperia X Performance and Xperia XA.
