During COMPUTEX 2026, David McAfee, AMD Vice President and General Manager of Ryzen CPU and Radeon Graphics Business, gave a media interview, reviewing the development of AMD's motherboard ecosystem and providing further details on products and services for mainstream and mid-to-high-end gamers. The new Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Ryzen 7 7700X3D processorsThe underlying product strategy and market layout.

AM4 socket celebrates its 10th anniversary: The new 5800X3D is reborn using TSMC's new stacking process.
Regarding the highly anticipated development of AM4 motherboards, David McAfee stated that the AM4 motherboard ecosystem has officially reached its 10th anniversary. He emphasized that AM4 has an amazing development story and an extremely long lifespan. To celebrate this milestone, AMD has decided to relaunch the Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor with 3D V-Cache technology.
However, this "new" 5800X3D is not simply a repackaging of old inventory. David McAfee explained that the processor has undergone engineering design adjustments, with the main difference being the transfer of the original stacking process to TSMC's new stacking facilities and new process.

While the overall architecture is similar to the first-generation product, the new 5800X3D exhibits slight differences in temperature performance and some component configurations thanks to new stacking technology. Essentially, it's a redesigned product. This not only resolves previous production bottlenecks but also allows die-hard AM4 platform users to continue upgrading to ultimate gaming performance.
Compared to the previously released Ryzen 7 5800X, the newly released Ryzen 7 5800X3D is significantly more expensive. David McAfee explained that the main reason is the aforementioned design differences, as well as the different time and circumstances of the launch, especially the current market facing more component supply challenges, which will be reflected in the final price.
However, David McAfee also emphasized that the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor actually delivers better gaming performance. Especially with the current surge in DDR5 memory prices, many gamers are choosing to return to the AM4 platform because of the relatively lower price of DDR4 memory. Therefore, AMD believes that launching a new processor for older platforms will meet the needs of more gamers.

Precisely addressing budget pain points: The Ryzen 7 7700X3D fills a market gap.
In expanding its AM5 platform product line, AMD also launched the new Ryzen 7 7700X3D processor. Regarding the positioning of this product, David McAfee frankly stated that the current PC assembly market is full of challenges, with memory and storage devices being relatively expensive.
To address gamers' budget constraints, AMD aimed to offer more diverse options in the market. Therefore, the new Ryzen 7 7700X3D is an 8-core X3D processor with gaming performance very close to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but AMD is offering it at a lower, more affordable price. This allows gamers to still enjoy the powerful gaming performance of an X3D processor at a lower cost, even when faced with budget constraints from other components, thus meeting the needs of builders within different budget ranges.

Extending its long lifespan advantage: AM5's base support commitment extended to 2029.
In order to continue the success of the AM4 ecosystem, AMD announced that it will further extend its commitment to the AM5 socket from the original 2027 to 2029.

David McAfee emphasized that the long lifespan of motherboards is a significant value that AMD can provide to the entire ecosystem and end consumers. This strategy not only creates higher cost-effectiveness for end users and gamers, but also allows gamers to upgrade system performance over time without replacing the motherboard. AMD will also bring the long lifespan advantage of AM4 to the AM5 platform in the future.
However, given the rapid changes in current market trends such as AI applications, will this also affect AMD's motherboard socket design strategy? David McAfee explained that the market has indeed undergone many changes due to AI applications, so AMD will continue to monitor market demand. If there are clear market changes, AMD will indeed quickly adjust its product plans. However, at this stage, AMD will continue to extend the existing motherboard socket design as much as possible to achieve compatibility with more processors and reduce the difficulty of future upgrades for users.
Continue to solidify market advantage with cost-effectiveness
