Regarding the future of human-computer interaction, Qualcomm not only proposed future 5G-based services and integrated user experiences with Extended Reality (XR) technology and artificial intelligence systems, but also announced a collaboration with Baidu's DuerOS operating system, based on its Apollo artificial intelligence technology. This will enable more direct human-computer interaction through spoken language in a wider range of usage scenarios.
Qualcomm envisions the future of computing and information access. Besides enabling instant access to all kinds of information anytime through 5G connectivity, users will likely gain access to this information through various computer vision-driven extended realities, interacting with them through gestures and voice, and expanding beyond personal computing to encompass applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and smart cities.
Qualcomm believes that many future calculations will be based on 5G networking technology, and device-side computing will be more integrated with cloud computing. Therefore, the number of computing modes performed through extended reality devices will also increase in the future.
To further achieve these computing goals, Qualcomm announced a collaboration with Baidu's DuerOS to develop a complete AI voice interaction solution based on the Snapdragon 845 processor. This solution will enable more comprehensive human-computer interaction on more smartphone devices and can be expanded to more use cases through the DuerOS open architecture.
In addition to valuing Baidu's current experience in developing technologies such as artificial intelligence, Qualcomm also hopes to expand its collaboration with Baidu to include more hardware devices. DuerOS currently collaborates with over 100 branded devices, including refrigerators, air conditioners, set-top boxes, storytelling children's toys, and smart speakers, and is expanding its application to use cases such as homes, cars, and mobile devices.
This collaboration includes always-on, low-power, and voice-activated features using Qualcomm's Aqstic audio codecs (WCD934x and WCD9335). This allows users to activate the Xiaodu assistant on their DuerOS device simply by saying "Xiaodu, Xiaodu" to their device. Furthermore, Aqstic's echo cancellation and noise suppression technologies allow users to interact with Snapdragon-powered DuerOS devices via voice commands at any time.
In addition to collaborating with Baidu, Qualcomm has also previously collaborated with Google's Android operating system and Amazon's Alexa digital assistant service.
