In addition to Apple's plan to invest in GPU research and development, Samsung is also preparing to build its own GPU design.
Since 2015, the company has launched a self-designed architecture code-named "Mongoose".Exynos 8890 processorAfterwards, although Samsung still maintains the use of Mali GPU design provided by ARM, it seems that it will also follow Apple's development model of independently developing GPUs.
Samsung recently announced plans to develop its own GPU, a design that will maximize the performance of its processors' graphics processing capabilities. Samsung also announced plans to initially develop its own GPU for entry-level devices, with no plans for high-end processors. This means the Exynos processors used in flagship phones will continue to collaborate with ARM and utilize its Mali GPU design.
Samsung has not responded to this news, but if Samsung is determined to invest in GPU design on its own, combined with its own resources in necessary components such as memory and storage components, Samsung's overall device design will almost certainly not be affected by external resources.
Currently, processors from Samsung, MediaTek, and Huawei all use Mali series GPUs. Only some of MediaTek's processors use PowerVR series GPUs developed in cooperation with Imagination Technologies. Apple also previously cooperated with Imagination Technologies, but Imagination Technologies recently confirmed that Apple's futureCooperation will be terminatedQualcomm, on the other hand, is leveraging its subsequently acquired Adreno GPU to enhance the graphics performance of its processors, and is also leveraging its proprietary architecture to enhance processor performance.
In the past, Samsung has also cooperated with Imagination Technologies to adopt the PowerVR series GPU, but it was limited to specific processor products, and even later adopted the Mali series GPU design provided by ARM.
